How many games to the next FACEIT level?

Put in your ELO, your win rate and what a win and a loss usually move. You get the number on paper, the math behind it and the range real streaks give.

52% and 25 are placeholders. For your own numbers, look at your last 20 games on FACEIT: count the wins, and average what the wins gave and the losses cost.

The math

Games to the next level = ELO still needed / average ELO per game, where the average ELO per game is your win rate times the ELO per win, minus your loss rate times the ELO per loss. At a 55% win rate and 25 ELO for a win and a loss, that is 0.55 x 25 - 0.45 x 25 = 2.5 ELO a game, so 100 ELO takes about 40 games on paper.

The number on paper is an average, and FACEIT is streaky. In 4,000 simulated players with exactly that 55% win rate, half reached +100 within 18 games, while 1 in 10 still needed more than 104. A few wins in a row do it fast, a losing streak sets you back for weeks. That is why the calculator shows a range and not one number.

  • Win rate matters most. With 25 ELO a win and a loss, every extra point of win rate adds 0.5 ELO a game. At 50%, with the same ELO for a win and a loss, you stand still on average.
  • ELO per game is not fixed. FACEIT says the amount you win or lose depends on how likely your team was to win. Beat a stronger team and you get more; lose to a weaker one and you lose more.
  • Your win rate changes as you climb. Higher ELO means stronger opponents, so the win rate you have now tends to drop toward 50% as you climb. Where it reaches 50% is where the climb stops, until you get better.

Track your real ELO and train what costs you ELO

Ascend reads your FACEIT matches, finds what costs you ELO and gives you the training for it. Then it tracks whether your ELO goes up. Free during the beta.

Questions

How many games does it take to reach level 10?

From the start of level 4 (901) to level 10 (2,001) is 1,100 ELO. At a steady 55% win rate and 25 ELO a game, that is 440 games on paper. Few players keep 55% all the way, because the opponents get stronger, so most need more or stop on the way. In a 2021 Leetify study of 10,000 FACEIT users (still CS:GO), the players who reached level 10 had needed about 575 matches on average.

Why did I gain fewer ELO than my friend for the same win?

Each player's gain depends on their own ELO against the other team. A player whose team was the favourite gains less from a win and loses more from a loss.
